A Level Chemistry at Aston is taught in three well-equipped laboratories. There are four well-qualified academic staff in the Department who are ably assisted by a full-time specialist technician. The course aims to teach both the fundamental principles of the science and also to develop an enquiring and imaginative approach to the subject. The emphasis throughout is on the development of understanding and not merely mechanical reproduction of factual material. Students carry out a considerable amount of practical work. This supports and illustrates the theoretical content of the course. The course adheres closely to the fundamental principles on which chemistry is based: the relationships between atomic and molecular structure and the properties of substances; the factors governing the rate of chemical change; energy changes and the Second Law of Thermodynamics; the equilibrium law and the Periodic Table of the Elements. At King Edward VI Aston School we intend on offering the new AQA specification for the chemistry A level. This shows significant changes from the current A level specification and the department is well prepared to make the coming change. The A Level is assessed through three examinations, each two hours long, at the end of the two year course.
