A lot of the areas covered in A-level chemistry are familiar to those you would have studied at GCSE, such as the structure of an atom, bonding, quantitative chemistry, alkanes and the periodic table. However there are several new topics you will encounter whilst on the course. Such as enthalpy, kinetic theory, haloalkanes, alcohols and many new analytical techniques. You will often spend time conducting experiments and research in a laboratory environment, so you must be prepared to work with a range of scientific equipment and bring your own lab coat! Students of A-level chemistry generally leave the course with the ability to recognise, recall and show understanding of specific chemical facts, terminology, principals, concepts and practical ability. There will be opportunity for trips & residential stays, to help further knowledge and understanding and to provide enrichment.

What you need to get on

Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics and either Grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry or 6-6 in Dual Award Science with a 6 in the Chemistry component.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
