?New A Level Specifications from September 2015. The course comprises the traditional three branches of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry. First Year: Physical: Atomic structure, mole calculations, bonding, energetics, qualitative kinetics and equilibria, including Le Chatelier's Principle Inorganic: Periodicity; the chemistry of the Alkaline earth metals (group 2) and the Halogens (group 7) Organic: Alkanes, halogenoalkanes, alkenes, alcohols and organic analysis Second Year: Physical: Thermodynamics, rate equations and equilibria constant, electrode potentials and electrochemical cells. Inorganic: Period 3 elements and their oxides, transition metals, reactions of aqueous ions. Organic: Optical isomerism, carbonyls and their derivatives, aromatic chemistry, amines, amino acids and polymers, including protein and DNA, NMR spectroscopy and chromatography.

What you need to get on

A Level Chemistry is highly regarded by universities because of the demanding nature of the course. To cope and be successful, you will need Chemistry 7 (or Combined Science 7-7) and Mathematics 7 You will need to be able to work independently as well as being able to work strongly as part of a team, communicate ideas effectively in your written work, research and think critically about chemical problems.

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
