The course is all about building on what you have learnt at GCSE, then taking it a step further. There are three branches to investigate; Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. In these we take a closer look at just what goes on inside an atom; investigate patterns in the periodic table, look at the chemistry of hydrocarbon compounds and much more; polymers, the modynamics, analytical techniques, DNA analysis... and you will also pick up useful practical skills that are used in chemistry the world over. The whole course helps students develop a number of personal skills: How to assemble data and assess it How to investigate facts experimentally and use deduction How to put over your point of view fluently How to work as a team to achieve results
What you need to get on
To study this course you must have achieved Grade 6-6 in GCSE Combined Science or if your school offers it Grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry.
How you are assessed
Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
What this level means
The A-level-equivalent step, and what universities and employers ask for.
