A Level Chemistry
at Brigshaw High School · school or sixth form
What the college says
A level Chemistry is a two year course. The course covers the 3 main areas of Chemistry; • Physical Chemistry which covers the key areas of reaction rates, equilibria systems and acids and bases • Inorganic Chemistry which covers the periodic table, redox reactions and transition metals • Organic Chemistry which covers the chemistry of carbon compounds. The core topics of atomic structure, chemical bonding and moles are studied first. These ideas are then applied as the three areas of study are covered. In Year 12: • Physical Chemistry – equilibria and kinetics and energetics • Inorganic Chemistry – periodic trends, group 2, group 7 and redox reactions • Organic Chemistry – naming organic compounds and studying alkanes, alkenes and alcohols as organic functional groups In Year 13: • Physical Chemistry – acids and bases and the chemistry of batteries • Inorganic Chemistry – transition metals • Organic Chemistry – isomerism, amines, amino acids and polymers as well as methods to analyse organic compounds
What you need to get on
Chemistry is a demanding A Level course and we would expect candidates to have achieved at least a grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry or Combined Science Higher tier. We would also expect students to achieve a 5 in Maths and 4 in English. It is strongly recommended that you study A Level Maths alongside this qualification
How you are assessed
Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
What this level means
The A-level-equivalent step, and what universities and employers ask for.
Is it open to 16 to 18 year olds?
Approved for 16 to 18 study on the government's Section 96 list.
