Sociology is all about the study of social behaviour – how people behave in groups, why people behave the way they do, what factors in society affect their behaviour. In looking at human behaviour, sociologists go far beyond the “common sense”, investigating all of the important areas of social life and the major issues and problems facing modern society. Do you take an interest in people? Take notice of what is going on around you? Enjoy a good discussion? Listen to the opinions and theories of others? Question things you read in the newspapers or see on TV? Enjoy reading abstract theories and writing essays? Have the capacity for a lot of hard and challenging work? Then sociology could be for you!

What you need to get on

5 GCSE Grade 9 to 4, including a Grade 5 in English and a Grade 5 in Maths and if studied in Grade 5 in Sociology.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.

The A-level-equivalent step, and what universities and employers ask for.
