Sociology is the study of our society. It aims to explore the complex features of our social life which may otherwise go unnoticed. For example, sociologists attempt to explain the reasons for crime and deviance; the diversity of modern family life and the multiple social factors which can affect our achievement in education. The subject encourages us to analyse various themes in our society, such as power, inequality and discrimination and to consider the effects of each. Sociology is a fascinating course for students who question the world and seek to understand their place within it. It aims to uncover why society is structured and works in the way it does, and the impact that this has on all of our lives. What you will learn: The A level sociology course has six main components, including the study of: • Sociological theory, developed to explain the social world • Sociological methods, used by sociologists to study society and collect data • Families and Households, including how these have changed in recent times • Beliefs in Society, and the impact of religion, science and ideology in our lives • Education, and the various factors inside and outside schools which affect attainment • Crime and Deviance, and explanations for criminal behaviour linked to age, ethnicity, gender and class. Grade 6 or above in GCSE English Language/GCSE English Literature and a grade 6 or above in any Humanities subject (eg GCSE History, GCSE Geography, GCSE EP)
