What the college says

Sociology, in the broadest sense, is the study of society. It is a very broad discipline that examines how humans interact with each other and how human behaviour is shaped by social structures (groups, communities, organizations), social categories (age, sex, class, race, etc.), and social institutions (politics, religion, education, etc.). The basic foundation of sociology is the belief that the attitudes, actions, and opportunities of individuals are shaped by all of these aspects of society. Through the duration of the course, students will study institutions including The Education System and The Family in their first year and then go on to look at Religion and Crime in their second year. As well as examining trends and explanations for trends in these areas, pupils will be required to analyse the functions of these institutions through the lens of perspectives such as Marxism, Feminism and Functionalism. Pupils will also be required to understand the key features of different approaches to research and evaluate their effectiveness in a range of different contexts.
