Sociology is the study of society and of people and their behaviour. A level sociology includes a range of topics such as Families and Households, Education, Crime and Deviance and Beliefs in Society. In studying these topics, sociologists create theories that seek to explain human behaviour and the workings of society. These theories often develop from various perspectives such as Functionalist, Marxist or Feminist. Sociology is an evidence-based subject, which means it is not simply based on personal opinion, but methodically collected evidence. Research can be carried out in a number of different ways, for example interviews, questionnaires, observations and secondary sources. If you are interested in current affairs, politics and social issues, then Sociology is the subject for you.

What you need to get on

Students must have achieved at least five strong passes (to at least Grade 5) at GCSE level, including English Language and Maths.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
