What the college says
Sociology is about the study of people living together in social groups ranging in size from the family to the nation state. It analyses human behaviour by identifying patterns within social groups and explaining the factors which shape them. Sociologists study the effect that living in advanced industrial society has on people’s lifestyles and social attitudes, analysing those structures in which they operate in their day-to-day lives. In year 12 we study the sociology of education, families and households and research methods. In the education unit the topics include why we have an education system and the experiences of being a student within it from a class, gender and ethnicity perspective. In the families and households unit we look at the role of the family as a unit in society, consider changing patterns in family such as rising divorce and falling birth rates and look at the impact of social policy on family structures. In year 13 we continue the study of research methods and sociological theory as a development from the year 12 content. In addition to this, we study the sociology of crime and deviance with topics ranging from the role of the justice system, exploring why it appears different social classes commit different types of crime, to the purpose of surveillance in society.
