The simplest definition of Sociology is ?the study of people in social groups?. People are social beings, not just individuals with their own separate existences. Their lives are shared with others and shaped by the society in which they live. Sociologists research widely varying aspects of life in the real social world, collecting data in a rigorous and systematic way, and formulating sociological theories. Sociological perspectives include: structural approaches (are we largely moulded by the wider society and forced to behave in certain ways?); and social action approaches (do we have the freedom to decide our own actions?) During the first year students cover three key topics: the sociology of youth cultures, the education system and research methods. During the second year they will build on research methods and also study crime and deviance and theories of social stratification. If you are fascinated by the behaviour of others and are interested in what is going on in the world, then Sociology should interest you, as it will help you look more objectively at society, explaining how it fits together and changes, and the consequences of that social change.?By focusing on the external forces that affect values, attitudes and behaviours, it helps us better understand ourselves and the motivations of others around us.?Sociology will help you build and strengthen your essay skills as well as encouraging critical thinking and your ability to make and sustain an argument.
