This Level 2 Engineering programme is the ideal choice if you are new to the subject or have completed the Level 1 programme and want to enhance your skills. It will develop your skills in organising work and identifying and preventing problems. This programme will allow you to acquire some theoretical engineering knowledge but mostly practical mechanical engineering skills in a controlled environment, with the opportunity to gain entry level employment in a variety of engineering and manufacturing settings, or as an apprentice or indeed to progress onto our Level 3 Diploma in Engineering if you have a grade 4 or above in maths and English. This programme is seen by many employers as their preferred route into their apprenticeships. The course will cover the fundamental skills and knowledge you will need to enter the engineering industry. You will need to complete three mandatory units: Working safely in engineering Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively Using and communicating technical information You will also take a number of optional units that include: Producing components using hand fitting techniques Preparing and using lathes and milling machines Preparing and using welding equipment Producing sheet metal and platework components and assemblies Assembling and testing electronic circuits In addition you will learn the importance of working to a high standard, in a safe and measured way. What you need to get on
A minimum of four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English and maths. We would strongly recommend you have a grade 4 or above in maths.
How you are assessed
Learning a trade with tools and equipment, often in a college workshop or salon.
What this level means
The GCSE-equivalent step, and the usual route into Level 3.
