What the college says

This course is suitable for adults already working in Primary, special or Secondary schools assisting teaching staff on a paid or voluntary basis and who do not have a relevant qualification but wish to update their knowledge and skills. It allows you to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting, teaching and learning in schools.

What you need to get on

Hold Functional Skills Level 2 English and Level 1 Maths (or equivalent). Completed voluntary work in a school during the last 3–6 months. Secured a school placement (Year 1 +), in order to complete the mandatory placement requirement of 2 days per week. You will need to be supporting children in Maths, English and ICT. Evidence of qualifications, previous experience and placement must be provided at interview. Demonstrate an understanding of key terms such as describe, explain and identify.

How you are assessed

Learning a trade with tools and equipment, often in a college workshop or salon.

What this level means

The GCSE-equivalent step, and the usual route into Level 3.
