Aims of the course These are the same as the Mathematics A level plus the study of Further Mathematics provides a chance to explore new and/or more sophisticated concepts, to distinguish you as an able mathematician in the university and employment market, and to ease transition to a mathematics-related university course. This qualification is both deeper and broader than A level Mathematics. It is studied in addition to A level Mathematics. What is the outline of the course content? The prescribed core for Further Mathematics must comprise around 50% of the content. This core content is proof, complex numbers, matrices, further algebra and functions, further calculus, further vectors, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and differential equations. Various options will be available for the school to choose from, to build up the remainder of the qualification. We are likely to choose discrete mathematics and mechanics. What key skills will I learn? Mathematical argument, language and proof, e.g. construct and present mathematical arguments through precise statements involving correct use of symbols and connecting language. Mathematical problem solving, e.g. recognise the underlying mathematical structure in a situation to enable problems to be solved. Mathematical modelling, e.g. interpret the outputs of a mathematical model in the context of the original situation. Grade 4 GCSE in Mathematics and English Language A minimum of five GCSEs at grades 5 and above including grade 6 in the subjects selected for A Level. *To study Further Maths a grade 7 in Mathematics GCSE is required A grade 5 in English is essential for accessing Business Studies, Economics, Government & Politics, Media, Philosophy & Ethics, Psychology and Sociology if you have not studied these subjects at GCSE. A grade 5 in Mathematics is essential for accessing Physics/Biology/Chemistry and also Business Studies, Computing, Economics and Product Design- if you have not studied these subjects at GCSE.
