What the college says
This is a full time study programme. The primary ways that you will be assessed will be through a theory exam and a synoptic assessment, these assessments will incorporate content from the four primary units that will be covered in the first part of the year: Animal Health and Welfare, Animal Feeding and Accommodation, Animal Behaviour and Handling and Working in the Animal Care Industry. The content from all of these modules will be included within the theory exam and learners will be expected to discuss the content covered during a practical observation as part of the synoptic assessment. You will also be expected to carry out 150 hours of external work experience as part of this course in order to gain your qualification. Throughout the course you will study 8 units in total. These include: Maintain Animal Health and Welfare, Animal Feeding and Accommodation, Animal Behaviour and Handling, Working in the Animal Care Industry, The Principles of Animal Biology, British Wildlife Species, Habitats and Rehabilitation, Caring for Zoo Animals, Health and Safety for Land Based Industries.
What you need to get on
Level 2 (Intermediate) - 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above. Including a 4 or above in biology/science You will be interviewed for this course, should be enthusiastic about working in the animal management sector and able to participate in work experience.
How you are assessed
Learning a trade with tools and equipment, often in a college workshop or salon.
What this level means
The GCSE-equivalent step, and the usual route into Level 3.
