In the first Year students will study one British history unit. This unit focuses on the early Tudors, Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I. It looks at the break with Rome and Henry VIII’s struggle for a male heir. Students also study Germany from 1919-1963. This is an overview of the problems that Germany faced after the First World War to the subsequent rise of the Nazi Party, their road to war and then Germany’s division in 1945 and the impact of the Cold War on Germany. In the final year of A Level History students will study Civil Rights in the USA 1865-1992 focusing on the experience of Africans-Americans, Women, Trade Unions and Native Americans. Students will analyse the role of key individuals, important legal landmarks, the role of presidents and the importance of activism in gaining equality for disadvantaged groups in the USA. Students will choose a historical period, topic and an essay of their choice for the coursework element of the A Level. This is their opportunity to pursue an area of history that really interests them.
