Economics is about the world around us; it’s current; it’s always changing; it’s always interesting. It’s the subject that allows you to study Tesco’s and Asda’s methods of competition one day, and learn about the environment and pollution permits the next. It’s about the modern world; it’s about how we behave, how businesses behave and how the government behaves. Economics teaches us how to make well-informed decisions. A large part of the subject is decision making: what should the government do to cut the budget deficit; what should a business do to raise profit margins? It teaches us how to go about making choices which is important in life and in any future career.

What you need to get on

It's not a requirement that you should have studied Economics at GCSE in order to take this course. However, if you have done so, you must achieve a grade 6 or above in Economics before being accepted onto the course. A grade 6 or above in Maths and English is also required. 20% of the exams are assessed using quantitative skills. Be prepared to be able to use formulas, interpret statistics, graphs and use index numbers. You will also need to be able to write fluently using economic theory.
