GCE A Level in Computer Science
at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School · school or sixth form
What the college says
Studying Computer Science will give you the opportunity to think creatively, logically and critically, giving you an understanding of computer systems and the ability to apply your knowledge and skills to solve problems. A large part of Computer Science involves writing computer programs and a good proportion of our lesson time is spent programming. For exam purposes we will use C#, but over the two years other languages are also used. This course is for students with an interest in how computers and computer systems work, how they are constructed and programmed. You'll need to have studied ICT or computing at GCSE to move on to onto it. You might be choosing computer science because you're headed for a computing career, though thinking computationally (logically, using reasoning, breaking complicated things down and being able to express instructions precisely) is a skill that can be used in a wide range of other careers too. To study Computer Science A level, you'll need a keen interest in computers and good technical, mathematical and problem solving skills. Computer Science particularly complements subjects such as Science and Maths.
What you need to get on

Most students on the course will have completed GCSE Computer Science, and while this is not an entry requirement, if you have not studied Computer Science at GCSE you should possess very good background knowledge and also have some experience of computer programming.
How you are assessed
