The course aims to extend and broaden the students’ existing knowledge and understanding of Chemistry developed by the GCSE course. It is composed of nineteen topics, covering: Advanced Inorganic and Physical Chemistry - concerning looking at the groups of the Periodic table in more depth, Acid- Base reactions, Redox Reactions and Reaction Kinetics, especially equilibria. Advanced Organic and Physical Chemistry – concerning hydrocarbons and functional groups, Kinetics of Organic reactions and Analytical techniques. The Third paper draws on any of the topics in this specification, and will include synoptic questions that may draw on two or more different topics covered. It will also include questions that assess conceptual and theoretical understanding of experimental methods that will draw on students’ experiences of the core practicals. The assessment of practical skills is a compulsory requirement of the course of study for A level Chemistry. It will not be calculated in the overall mark but will appear on all students’ certificates as a separately reported result, alongside the overall grade for the qualification. On average two to three hours homework is set per week, but students are expected to reinforce this with extra work on their own. Initially significant guidance is given on background reading but it is hoped that students will independently choose extra reading as the course develops.

What you need to get on

Grade 7 in Triple Science Chemistry or grade 7 in combined science. Students must achieve grade 7 in the chemistry units of combined science. In addition Grade 5 in English and Maths is required
