It plays a vital role in medicine, industry, energy, and the environment. A Level Chemistry at South Devon College gives you the opportunity to explore this fascinating subject in depth. You’ll work in well-equipped laboratories alongside fully qualified chemists with real-world industrial experience, learning through a combination of research, experimentation and guided theory. In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation by studying atomic structure, bonding, the periodic table, energy changes and core organic chemistry. In the second year, you’ll extend your understanding with topics such as physical chemistry, transition elements, more advanced organic chemistry, and a range of analytical techniques used in modern labs. Practical work is an essential part of the course. You’ll develop your laboratory skills throughout, working towards the practical endorsement, a key part of the qualification and excellent preparation for university-level science. You’ll also gain confidence tackling exam questions based on practical scenarios, which make up around 15% of your final assessment.
