What the college says

Sociology is the study of society - the way in which society shapes people’s values, their education, careers, families and roles that they play in life. Sociologists attempt not just to describe trends in our society but also to explain how and why these changes happen. Topics of study and assessment: Paper 1 - Education with theory and methods - studying the role of education in society. Paper 2 - Family and Beliefs – the former examines the changing nature of family in Britain, reflecting the growing diversity of contemporary Britain, the latter examines the sociological explanations for the importance of religion on society. Paper 3 – Crime and Deviance with theory and methods - why do we have crime in society and why some groups are more likely than others to turn to crime? It also examines the role of the media and globalisation in contemporary crime. Assessment is via 3 exams at the end of year 13.
