Advanced GCE in English Language and Literature (EMC)
at The Queen Katherine School, Kendal · school or sixth form
What the college says
Designed for students who: Enjoy reading and writing and have an interest in how communication works in various contexts, from casual conversation to formal literature. Achieved a strong foundation in both English Language and English Literature at GCSE level (typically a minimum of grade 5 in both is recommended for A-level entry). Want to develop advanced analytical skills, including critical thinking, textual analysis, and the ability to construct well-supported arguments. Are interested in a blend of literary and linguistic approaches, exploring both the artistry of texts (novels, poetry, plays, non-fiction) and the mechanics of language (grammar, phonology, pragmatics). Wish to develop their creativity through producing their own original non-fiction writing. Plan to progress to higher education (university) or careers where strong communication, research, and critical awareness skills are highly valued.
