A2 Level Sociology
at Teign School, Newton Abbot · school or sixth form
What the college says
What will I study? • Sociology is the study of the way in which groups of people, of a variety of sizes, work together – and sometimes do not work so well together! Themes such as socialisation, culture and identity as well as social differentiation, power and stratification run throughout the course. Together these help to develop a sense of the underlying structures and systems in social groups. • It is recognised that Sociology will be a relatively new subject for many students, so an initial unit on culture, socialisation and identity introduces students to typical sociological ideas and ways of thinking. • Topics in Year 12 include one on “Families and Households” which considers changes in family structures and the relationship between families and wider society. A second Year 12 unit covers the Sociology of Education and sociological research methods. • Year 13 takes a broader view, covering Global Development, Crime and Deviance and wider Sociological theory. • Sociology typically takes the apparently familiar and develops an understanding of the way in which so much of what we might take for granted is actually a result of some rather complex processes, assumptions and conventions. Assessment The following skill areas will be assessed: AO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: sociological theories, concepts and evidence AO2: Apply sociological theories, concepts, evidence and research methods to a range of issues AO3: Analyse and evaluate sociological theorie
