A Level Textiles is an art-based subject, so an interest in art and drawing is essential. Throughout your research you will experiment with a wide range of techniques and processes, including drawing and painting, hand and machine embroidery, print making, garment construction, felt making, ceramics, screen printing and many more. An A Level Textiles opens up a lot of opportunities in the field of Art & Design. If you are interested in potential careers in industries such as fashion, arts and crafts, fine art, printed textiles, ceramics, fashion marketing or journalism; A Level textiles is a good starting point. During your first year you will complete a portfolio, which will cover the formal elements, drawing observational studies, gathering research and looking at the work of others. Techniques you will use include Hand/machine embroidery, using the sewing machine, print making, ceramics, fashion illustration, constructing a garment/wall hanging/jewellery making. With the exam unit you are given a range of questions to choose from. You will spend time researching your chosen theme through a series of observational drawings, photographs and visits to museums/galleries. Techniques you will use include applique, printing, using the heat press, dissolvable fabric, using Photoshop, and constructed textiles. All work is coursework based and a certain amount of written work is expected in your sketchbook, in the exam unit you will create a final outcome within 10 hours under exam

Five Grade 5s at GCSE and at least a 5 in Art
