Sociology is the study of society and how it influences us to become the people we are. Society is a human creation. It consists of all relationships that we have with other people - in our family, in schools, in workplaces and through the government and organisations which rule our lives. Sociologists like to study these relationships and also ask lots of questions, such as: Do rich people exploit poor people? Why do some children do better in school than others? Are lone parents a problem for society?

What you need to get on

You will need a good set of GCSE results, including a C or above in English, and an interest in people. You need to be good at English because you will be expected to build strong arguments and write coherent, well-crafted essay answers. You will also be required to read independently around the subjects we study in class.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
