Sociology is a social science, which at its heart studies why people behave in the way that they do and how society and institutions such as governments, the media and education influence the way that people are. Studying sociology offers insights into social and cultural issues. It helps a person develop a multi-perspective and critical approach to understanding issues around culture, identity, crime, family and social power. More than once during the course you are bound to ask the question why has society developed like this? With poverty, ignorance, crime and injustice? The course will be divided into six topics, with two topics assessed in each of the three papers. Issues covered range from the social distribution and causes of crime and deviance to the role and function of the education system. Underpinned by sociological methods and theories, such as Marxism, Feminism and Functionalism, A-level Sociology will help you develop a range of beneficial skills, whether you decide to go on to further study or the working world. These include the investigation of facts, the use and deduction of evidence, critical thinking and the ability to analyse and evaluate societal issues. Careers that utilise a Sociology A-level include, social work, journalism, law, human resources, policing and teaching.
