The purpose of sociology, as with all sciences, is to uncover that which is hidden. Sociology students’ study and participate in the science of society, investigating the power and influence of social institutions. More specifically students analyse the influence of the education system, families and households, the criminal justice system and beliefs. Studying sociology will answer many questions students have about society and how humans behave and interact. Sociology celebrates and promotes diversity and allows students to develop an understanding of cultural and religious differences and similarities and examine in detail how an individual’s gender, ethnicity and social class interact and impact upon their life chances.

What you need to get on

Students must achieve Grade 6 in GCSE English. Students choosing this course need strong literacy skills.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
