What the college says

A Level Fine Art enables students to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of Fine Art through drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and multimedia approaches. They will visit exhibitions and experience workshops such as life-drawing run by practicing artists. The 2 year A Level course will include an initial teacher led foundation project to build up students' skills undertaken in the first term. They will then begin developing independent themes and approaches for their 'personal investigation' project. At A Level the students work on an assessed extended major 'personal investigation' project producing a body of work which they choose independently. This can include anything the student feels appropriate to their selected theme, issue or concept which shows a development from an initial starting point to a final realisation. Included at A Level is the study of how artists work and express their ideas and feelings relating to different times and contexts. At A Level the personal investigation is supported by a written study of approximately 3,000 words. The externally set assignment is a question paper which gives a variety of different starting points which the students select one question to respond to. They then undertake a 15 hour exam at the end of the course.
