This course provides the first step on a path to a career within the fashion industry. The course is structured to raise awareness of the breadth and diversity of the fashion and textiles industry, and designed to enable students to acquire a range of essential practical skills, whilst retaining the freedom to identify and develop areas of individual interest and ability.The course comprises of six units across the two years of study (three units in the diploma/three units in the extended diploma) with assessment outcomes integrated into assignments, which gradually build on each other to provide a broad-based and vocationally relevant fashion programme. During the first year students will be introduced to basic fashion studies, and will also have the opportunity to explore related aspects of art and design including textiles, history of fashion, drawing and mixed media. During the second year the course becomes increasingly specialist, as students are encouraged to build up individual portfolios of work, geared towards their particular areas of interest within the fashion industry. The course culminates in the production of individual student collections. The predominant approach is project-based, in specialist well equipped studios.
