This course aims to encourage students to explore basic questions of human existence within the setting of both the religious tradition of Buddhism, Philosophy and Ethics. Students will gain a thorough understanding of philosophical and ethical concepts as well as religious writings, practices and beliefs within Buddhism, students will look at a range of Philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Wittgenstein and Kant to name but a few. The key skill required is be able to think and argue intelligently about the themes studied. The examination is not concerned with judging a candidate’s personal belief or religious point of view. This course does not assume or require any previous study of the subject. It is designed to be suitable for candidates from any religious background (or none). Lessons involve discussion, debating, note taking, video note taking, seminar work, presentations and research. This is an excellent subject for those also studying Mathematics, Science, History, English, Psychology, Politics or Sociology. It is also considered to provide suitable preparation for entry to the Russell Group of leading UK universities. In career terms, it would contribute towards professions such as: journalism, media, teaching, human resource management, archaeology, law, social work, broadcasting, industry and commerce, the Civil Service and many more.

What you need to get on

Grade 5 or above in GCSE Religious Education (Full Course) and Grade 5 or above in either GCSE English Language or English Literature. An enquiring mind and a genuine interest in a wide range of philosophical and ethical issues are also necessary.

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
