If you are moving on from music GCSE, intending on a career as a musical performer or composer, or wish to develop your analytical skills and broaden your knowledge and understanding of all kinds of music, then A level music could be for you. The course is excellent preparation for higher education courses in music, both classical and popular pathways but it is equally valuable as a second or third choice to complement your other A level subject choices to due the many transferrable skills that the course draws on . You'll need strong performance skills, creativity in composing your own music and developing your working knowledge and music technology skills and a willingness to engage with a broad and varied range of musical styles and genres. Music A level will give you transferable skills such as creativity, self-discipline, teamwork and time management which are useful in a wide range of careers within the diverse Music Industry.

What you need to get on

GCSE Music Grade 5+ and the ability to read stave notation fluently. You should be a minimum of Grade 5 standard or equivalent on your chosen instrument of study or voice. Grade 5 theory would be an advantage.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
