Media Studies

What the college says
Media Studies examines an increasingly media-rich society. It takes everyday texts such as film trailers, magazines, advertisements and news bulletins and analyses them, questioning the content and structure of the text, who created it and why? What are the implications of one individual, such as Rupert Murdoch, having control over a vast range of media institutions, including BSkyB, News International, 20th Century Fox, AOL, Warner Bros. and so on? Media Studies also explores the effects that media texts have on their audiences. Advertisements have been very successful at getting us to buy products, but can the media be blamed for the violent behaviour of individuals in society? How are different groups of people represented in various media texts and how do these representations affect how those people are viewed in society. You will be given tasks to do in class and in your own time. You will be expected to undertake lots of independent research and to explore the topic areas we look at in class in more detail. You will need to be demonstrate your understanding of the theories we cover in creative/production tasks. You will draw on your existing knowledge of the media and develop your ability to respond critically to the media. You will explore a wide variety of media, drawing on the fundamental concepts informing the study of the media: texts, industry and audiences. You will also be required to complete creative work in order to gain a greater appreciation of the media t
