What the college says
With the prevalent and ever growing influence of the media in modern society, Media Studies is increasing in popularity at both A Level and degree level. The A Level Media Studies course gives you a broad experience of many different aspects of the media, including film, television, print media (newspapers, advertising and magazines) and social media. This course is 30 percent practical coursework and 70 percent summer exam. As such, this course is particularly suited to students who want a more rounded A Level experience. Not only do we analyse and evaluate the media, we get to create it in class. In year 12, students create a DVD cover and a poster as one piece of coursework, and a 30 second moving image advert for the other. Year 13 students are set external coursework from the exam board which is a different task each year. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively, in group situations, and understand different aspects of a constantly changing media. You will develop media literacy, analysing and studying the media and applying theoretical perspectives to your understanding of meaning. You will also develop a wide range of multi-media ICT skills.
