What the college says
Core Maths is a qualification taken alongside A Levels, or other Level 3 qualifications, complementing a range of academic and technical programmes. It is effectively an AS Level qualification and it is designed for students to retain, deepen and extend their knowledge and skills from GCSE, as well as studying and applying new level three material relevant to their needs. It helps to develop students’ mathematical skills and thinking and supports courses such as A Level Psychology, Sciences and Geography as well as technical and vocational qualifications. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Core Maths is for students who need to be equipped for the mathematical and quantitative demands of other courses and employment, but it is also particularly relevant for those who need these skills to meet the demands of a range of courses in higher education. COURSE DETAILS: This is a two year course with all assessments being covered in Year 13. This takes the form of 2 exam papers covering the following content: • interpreting solutions in the context of the problem • understanding sources of error and bias when problem-solving • working with data • understanding risk and probability • understanding variation in statistics • using exponential functions to model growth and decay
