Higher Level The course contains the study of: algebra; calculus; matrices and vectors; statistics and probability; trigonometry. As you can see, this covers much of the same topics as A-Level. In reality, the Higher IB course covers these topic areas in more depth, so the program of study is fast-paced. The course is assessed by three final examinations and an internally assessed portfolio. It is essential that you purchase a graphical calculator for studying this course. The college can purchase one for you at a reduced rate. You should take mathematics at the higher level if you are at all likely to need mathematics in your later studies. Standard Level There are two different courses at standard level. Course 1: Mathematical Standard The course contains the study of: algebra; trigonometry; calculus; statistics and probability; functions; geometry. The course is assessed by two final examinations and an internally assessed portfolio. Again, a graphical calculator is essential when studying this course. You should take this course if you are good at mathematics but do not wish to specialise in the subject. Course 2: Mathematical Studies The course contains the study of: functions; computation; algebra; sets and logic; business techniques; geometry and trigonometry; probability and statistics; matrices; calculus. HIGHER LEVEL This course is suitable if you have A/A* at GCSE. It is a fast-paced course which covers more than the A level. MATHEMATICS SL This course is suitable if you enjoy mathematics and wish to extend your knowledge of the subject. It is suitable if you have a B or above at GCSE. It may be a requirement for your university choice, please talk to a member of the mathematics department for more details. MATHEMATICAL STUDIES SL This course is suitable if you have a C or above at GCSE . GENERAL For the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB), a student should be a general all-round student,with an overallB-grade profile or higher at GCSE or level 2 equivalentand have a B grade or more in the subject s/he wishes to take at IB diploma higher level or as IB single-subject certificate.
