Sociology is the study of human behaviour, social relationship and culture. This course has a focus on education and the role education plays within society. Students will better understand the world around them and will be able to tackle important questions about our society and our culture in the UK. Have you ever wondered what causes outbreaks of public violence? Have you ever asked yourself why children from wealthier backgrounds significantly outperform those from poorer backgrounds in the education system? Have you ever wondered why there are so few women in British prisons, and in general why women commit less crime than men? Have you ever wondered about why social class, ethnicity and gender have a significant impact on your chances of success? These issues are topics covered in the A Level Sociology course and as you might imagine, they are issues that provoke much debate and disagreement.

What you need to get on

Five passes in GCSE at grade 4 or above. One of the five passes will include English at grade 5 or higher.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.

The A-level-equivalent step, and what universities and employers ask for.
