at Holy Cross College, Bury · college
What the college says
English Literature takes you on journeys few subjects can match; anywhere you can think of, in fact. We?ll travel through time, look deep into human emotions, explore the lives of fantastical characters you will never meet and yet, through the power of your imagination, you will come to feel you know so well. What we?ll studyOn this course you will develop impressive reading, writing and analysis skills as you study a wide range of texts, including poetry, plays and novels. The texts we?ll be studying include Mean Time (Duffy), The Whitsun Weddings (Larkin), The Color Purple (Walker), Dr Faustus (Marlowe), Hamlet (Shakespeare), Enron (Prebble). The texts we will explore will give you a sense of how people felt in different eras, from different cultures, from around the world. Your eyes will be opened to new ways of thinking and viewing the world. There are also many opportunities to take part in extra-curricular activities, including theatre visits and talks from writers and universities. It goes without saying that you should be ready to enjoy a great deal of reading.Your futurePrevious students now work in a wide range of fields, such as law, education, journalism, writing, broadcasting, politics, acting and lecturing. Careers in editing, PR, marketing or publishing are all love-of-literature professions and, of course, there are more traditional choices, like becoming a writer or a teacher.
