What the college says

A Level English Literature is the study of poetry, prose and drama from a variety of different historical periods � including current productions. You will analyse texts aesthetically, stylistically and politically, as we look at their impact and beauty, their mastery of the English language and the importance of their meanings in contributing to the experience of what it means to be human. You will study English literary heritage beginning with Chaucer and moving on to Shakespeare and Charlotte Bronte through to more current texts by Carol Ann Duffy. You will look at works that are serious, comic, fantastic, controversial, ground breaking and shocking, covering your two years major canonical works from every genre. During the first year, students will study texts across all three genres; poetry, prose and drama. We will begin with the study of modern poetry (Carol Ann Duffy) and then move on to 20th century drama (A Streetcar Named Desire) which form the assessed texts for one of the AS exams. The other is the prose exam, incorporating the study of a pre-1900 novel (Jane Eyre) and a 20th century novel (e.g. The Wide Sargasso Sea.)

Five Grade 5s at GCSE and at least a 6 in English Language and English Literature

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
