What the college says

Students who have enjoyed studying Italian to GCSE and have a passion for further study will have the opportunity to extend all language related skills. They should have an interest in the culture of Italian speaking countries, and will be able to study examples of Italian film and literature. By the end of the course students can expect to reach a high level of fluency in the language. Students study two major themes at A-level; these are Social Issues and Trends and Political, Intellectual and Artistic Culture. They discuss ideas about the family, education, and the media as well as integration, multiculturalism, and discrimination. Vocabulary and grammar are studied systematically using a variety of course books, which are supplemented by material from other sources, and dedicated grammar resources. Personal research is an essential element of the course, and we have a wide range of materials in the Italian department and the library, as well as actively encouraging students to use the Internet and social media to enhance their skills. Students benefit greatly from time spent with the Assistant, where they have the opportunity to prepare thoroughly for the speaking exam in groups of two or three. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake a period of work experience in Italy in order to complement their studies in the classroom and to improve their fluency and comprehension of the spoken language.
