If you would like a practical job working with plants, this course is for you. You will be involved in plant production, selling plants in garden centres or tending to plants in parks and gardens. You would need to be able to work alone or in a team. Working with plants, from designing and building a new city park to developing new food crops can be incredibly rewarding and there is a wealth of career options for you to choose from. You will cover the following topics: -Prepare ground for planting -Plant container grown plants -Care for a planted area -Plant a container for display -Apply fertiliser -Prune deciduous spring flowers -Propagate indoors -Propagate by stem cuttings -Construct a paved area -Use a pedestrian controlled mower -Design a contemporary style garden Employment: Landscaper, Grounds person, Garden centre assistant, Gardener. Education: You can progress onto an Apprenticeship or into work These qualifications meet the needs of learners in a centre-based environment who may wish to work within the horticultural industry or progress to further learning and/or training. These qualifications allow learners to develop underpinning knowledge whilst practising skills that could be used within employment in the horticulture industry. To achieve the Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture (QCF), learners are required to achieve 5 credits from the units in the Mandatory group and 10 credits from the units in the Optional group. Four GCSEs at grade 3/D or above including English or Level 1 in Horticulture Acceptance onto the programme is also subject to an interview
How you are assessed
Learning a trade with tools and equipment, often in a college workshop or salon.
What this level means
The GCSE-equivalent step, and the usual route into Level 3.
