The A level History course has been designed to help students understand the value of significance of world events in the past and to gain a deeper understanding of social, cultural, religious and ethnic diversity in the process. Knowing how people lived in the past helps students to understand why people act like they do today. The A level course builds naturally on the skills that students developed throughout their GCSE in History, and so it is a good choice for a student who both enjoyed and achieved well at this level. History is traditionally a subject taken alongside geography, English or a foreign language but it can be complementary to maths or science, giving a broad educational base. A level History gives students knowledge and skills which will prepare them for higher education and which are also useful in any career. Students who specialise in History can go on to become historical researchers, work in heritage organisations or become teachers. History also supports other career paths, like journalism, politics, law, social work and public services.
