History allows us to explore societies, individuals, ideas and values. It is a subject that helps develop: analytical skills; communication skills; and research skills. History is highly regarded by Employers and Universities. The History department has a proud record of academic achievement. History is FASCINATING and CONTROVERSIAL. History is FUN. WHAT DO STUDENTS STUDY? Year 12 and 13: The Tudors 1485-1603 How did the Tudors secure the throne? Was there a mid-Tudor crisis? Was the Elizabethan age really golden? Year 12 and 13: Democracy and Nazism, Germany 1919-45. Why was the Weimar republic so unpopular? How did Hitler and the Nazis gain power? How did the Nazis rule Germany? Year 12 and 13 Historical Enquiry. Students are also given the opportunity to investigate and produce an enquiry that focuses on a 100 year period. HOW ARE STUDENTS ASSESSED? AS: Two written examinations (2 x 1 hr 30 mins) A Level: Two written examinations (2 x 2 hrs 30 mins) and one Historical Enquiry (20%). HOW DO STUDENTS LEARN? A variety of styles and methods are used. Students are often required to: work in groups; conduct investigations; produce presentations; and contribute to debates. The History department has organised a variety of trips in the past to Berlin and Amsterdam. We hope to be able to repeat a similar experience with the introduction of the new A level. Whilst in Berlin students undertook a study of the Third Reich and visited Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, Wannsee and sites
