Students will study how language is a living, dynamic system of communication. Linguistic diversity in speech is central to this AS Level, including the language of individuals, social groups and institutions. It involves the critical study of spoken, electronic and written texts including, stories published for young children, or the language of people in positions of power. This subject equips students with close analytical skills and offers a more scientific approach to study than is usually associated with English, skills which are vital for other subjects and many potential careers. There are numerous overlaps in English Language with subjects such as Psychology, Sociology, Politics, Biology and Law. This subject has a direct correlation to careers with children, Audiology, Advertising, Marketing, Law and Journalism. The breadth of the course fosters a lifelong interest of the English Language and makes students active and critical observers of the language that surrounds them in their everyday lives.

What you need to get on

A minimum Attainment 8 score of 60. A grade 6 in GCSE English Language and Maths. A grade 6 in the subject you wish to study (or two grade 6s if you wish to study a science and took Combined Science at GCSE).
