This is a linear course with the exams being in the summer of the second year. Throughout the 2 year course you will study a range of media theories and concepts over a variety of media platforms that link specifically to exam focused texts and briefs. This course will require further independent reading on a variety of theories and debates, such as gender issues, structuralism and post-modernism and apply them to the set media texts studied. You will also be required to complete NEA that will consist of a cross-media production (production across 2 platforms) based on a brief supplied by the exam board. This course will suit people who are keen to develop their knowledge of the media and society. It will also suit those who wish to develop their analytical skills and their ability to ask questions in order to challenge what they see or hear in the media, in particular the representations and responses, and the institutions behind the media. It would suit students who wish to enhance their creativity and knowledge of media. This course will also suit people who enjoy discussion activities, analysing music videos, adverts, television and print media (in particular advertising and marketing), and working in groups for linked production tasks. Likewise, the course will suit people who are able to work independently on their own projects and research.

What you need to get on

Ideally you need a GCSE 6 in English Language; however, if you have GCSE 5 and a willingness to work hard, then you may be welcomed on to the course. Students who have previously taken GCSE Media Studies and been successful in this subject, may also be welcomed on to the course despite their English Language grade.
