What the college says

A Level History offers two distinct options at A Level from the AQA specification; Medieval History covering the Crusades 1074-1201 and the Angevin Kings of England 1154-1216, OR Modern History, Britain 1951-2007 and America 1865-1975. Students will also complete a piece of coursework worth 20% of the final grade, on either the Wars of the Roses in the Fifteenth Century, or Irish Nationalism 1798-1922 respectively. All these periods are momentous moments in history. Students will have the opportunity to learn British, European and World history. Students sit two 2 hour 30 minute papers at the end of Year 13. A commitment to wider reading is expected and a good grasp of essay writing skills will be expected and nurtured. History is an exciting option due to the planned trips; York, London, France and even the USA are viable opportunities. Visiting lecturers from university, class debates, and a real connection to current events makes this subject a relevant option at A Level. This is a very useful qualification widely respected by universities. The department has a strong tradition of helping students gain places at the top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. Apart from being very interesting, the study of History compliments most other A Level subjects.
