Reading and debating are at the heart of A Level History. You also need to develop your writing skills and be able to write an essay in a limited timeframe. For the highest grades you must be analytical and be able to consider both sides of an argument and come to your own conclusion.

What you need to get on

If you have studied History GCSE, you need to have achieved a Grade 6 as a minimum as well as a minimum of a Grade 6 in English GCSE. If you have not studied History GCSE, then you must have achieved a minimum of a Grade 6 in English GCSE. You will also need to have an interest in History and be motivated to read around the topics to develop your understanding.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
