Linguistic skills develop far beyond GCSE. Focus moves from transactional language such as shopping and talking about hobbies to analysis and evaluation of current political and social events/trends, and the artistic impact and legacy of German societies on the modern world with the study of film and literature. You must be interested in developing your linguistic ability and understanding of the cultures and societies that have given us this language to get the most from the A Level. Why study MFL? It is a Facilitating Subject, one of those preferred/required by many Universities and is a well-respected option. Whilst the lingua franca for such diverse careers as Finance, Law, Science and Performing Arts is English, the ability to understand and express oneself in a foreign language is a distinct advantage and held in high regard by potential employers. How Is It Assessed? 3 papers at end of A Level: Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Writing Written paper 2.5 hours (50%). Listening and Reading Comprehension texts drawn from written and spoken passages from different contexts and sources. Material includes complex factual and abstract text. Questions target main points, gist and detail, and are in German and answered in that language or with non-verbal responses. Students have individual control of recording. To study this course, you should have at least a Grade 6 in GCSE German. Also, at least Grade 5 in GCSE Maths and English.
