German A Level is an ideal choice if you wish to further your knowledge of German culture, society and politics as well as build on traditional speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. This is a challenging and intellectually rewarding course, and as with the study of any language at advanced level you will need to develop and update your contextual knowledge on many issues. The Course You will develop your knowledge of the German-speaking world and the German language to a more sophisticated level through diverse topics including artistic and political culture, current trends and issues. You also learn more about the geography of Germany, German history and the German-speaking media, with emphases on film, literature, poetry, art, architecture and music. Additional Opportunities You will need to be well organised, consistently disciplined in your approach to learning vocabulary and practising grammar. A range of materials is available to support you, including a course book and a range of supplementary, bespoke materials produced by your teachers and the German Assistant. There are newspapers and magazines available and the department has an extensive lending library. Written stimuli such as newspaper articles, presentations, conversations and written pieces on contemporary issues are used to assess your development along the way. Our minimum entry requirements for September 2026 are six GCSEs at grade 6 or above, including English Language and Mathematics. Applicants must achieve Grade 7 or above in each of the subjects (or related subjects) that they wish to study at A Level.
