GCE A Level in English Literature B
at Great Western Academy · school or sixth form
What the college says
The philosophy of this course centres on teaching the students the different ways of reading and the connections which exist between texts. There is a clear focus on understanding genre, whereby the students will become experts in these areas as they explore a plethora of texts. Study of texts with the chosen literary and cultural genres in the examined topic areas is enhanced by the study of critical theory in Non-Examined Assessment (NEA). In this way, students can gain a solid understanding of how texts can be connected and how they can be interpreted in multiple ways so that students can arrive at their own interpretations and become confident autonomous readers. By the end of the course, students will have gained a broad and rich literary experience, whilst also acquiring the necessary exam and non-exam skills, which will undoubtedly prepare them for studying the subject, or those closely linked, further afield. Students will study English Literature through the following topics • Aspects of tragedy • Elements of crime writing • Non-examined assessment (critical theory and independent study of texts)
