Books, books and more books! English Literature is the study of prose, plays and poetry, spanning centuries and involving plenty of reading and analysis. Its an incredibly varied and diverse subject and one which overlaps with history, language and the social sciences to create a picture of how literature influences, and is influenced by, major changes in society and the world as we know it. Although reading is obviously a big part of the course, youll also find yourself discussing, analysing and exploring the texts you read, as well as linking them to related works and drawing a deeper meaning from them.

What you need to get on

The standard entry criteria to study in the sixth form are a 9-4 in at least seven different subjects, including English and mathematics, which would usually be at grade 4 or above.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.

The A-level-equivalent step, and what universities and employers ask for.
